Cara Curcio, LICSW
Psychotherapy
Welcome
Welcome, I am Cara Curcio, a Washington, DC based psychotherapist working in private practice in the heart of Adams Morgan.
About Me
I have been providing psychotherapy since 2016. I work to build a safe, comfortable rapport and I invite you to show up as yourself and to speak your mind. I am interested in helping you get to the root of whatever is troubling you and helping you to identify and overcome roadblocks and patterns that could be holding you back.
Prior to being in private practice, I worked in addictions counseling. I have completed two intensive two year post-graduate psychodynamic psychotherapy training programs, graduating from the Washington School of Psychiatry's Clinical Program in the Spring of 2021 and The Washington Baltimore Center for Psychoanalysis' Psychoanalytic Studies Program in the Spring of 2024.
I also have a background teaching yoga and am a long-time yoga practitioner. I work to incorporate yogic and mindfulness approaches in my work when appropriate.
My Approach
I have been trained in a variety of healing modalities and I take an eclectic approach in my work. I have extensive post-graduate training in psychodynamic theory and process. Additionally, I use cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavioral therapy principles to guide my interventions.
I am trained as a clinical social worker which means that I have a great sensitivity to an individual’s specific psychology, but also an appreciation of how a person’s subjectivity is influenced by their environment. It is important for me to be able to contextualize your individual experiences but also for me to understand the impacts that race, gender identity, socio-economic status, or immigrant status may have had on your life and development.

My background as a yoga teacher informs my consideration of the mind and body connection, and I also incorporate mindfulness principles into my therapy practice.
I work with...
Below are some examples of issues I have particular experience with
Anxiety and Depression
Anxiety and depression are common issues in our society and I will work to help you understand societal impacts on your well-being as well as work to help you understand your individual psychology and history and help give you move forward.
Gender and Sexuality
I have a lot of experience helping individuals explore their gender and sexuality. I work to provide an affirming and supportive environment for you to be able to investigate and be curious about yourself. I also can provide support and education for parents or family members and friends of trans and gender expansive people.
Addictions
Prior to private practice I provided individual and group addictions counseling. I can help you identify your goals, provide support for maintaining them, and also help you work at identifying possible underlying causes of addictive behaviors.
Eating Disorders
I have significant eating disorder recovery experience, and like with addictions work, I can assist with practical tools for eating disorder recovery, while also working to help you understand underlying core issues. I may recommend additional support such as a nutritionist or a specialized eating disorder program. I work through a framework of HAES and intuitive eating.
Trauma
I work with clients dealing with particular traumatic events that have caused troubling ripples in their lives, as well as working with clients with “complex trauma”, meaning traumatic events that have been repeated and possibly normalized throughout a person’s life.
Services
Individual Therapy
I provide individual psychotherapy. Sessions are 50 minutes long and we both decide on frequency. More sessions may be appropriate for deeper trauma work.
Family Therapy
I work with families of adolescents or with adult children to address a wide variety of issues.
Couples Therapy
I see couples who are in monogamous or polyamorous relationships.
